Maria is our Head of Tech Happiness. She’s in charge of everything from recruitment, to organising tech conferences and team retreats. She does it all and still has time to learn python and climb rocks.
This April we jumped on a plane (after almost missing the flight) to the sunny island of Majorca for a two-week retreat by the beach. Since the Tech and Analytics team has almost doubled this year, it gave us the perfect opportunity to welcome our newcomers by “forcing” them to go climbing, walk the Slackline, cycle around the island and eat enough frito mallorquín and tombet to last a lifetime.
Between exploring the island, dosing up on Vitamin D by the pool and playing Golden Eye on an N64, we also worked hard to push some new tech initiatives forward. A big focus is going to be dramatically simplifying our application process (more on that in a little while). We also took some time to reflect on the bigger picture – how to keep building a great team, new ideas for how to risk assess a small business and so on.
In the evenings, the temperature would drop dramatically, but that didn’t keep us from having a drink in the garden sitting under a pile of blankets with the view of the mountains. It also gave us a chance to put everyone’s culinary skills to the test, taking turns to cook up a feast for the whole team. Our very own Dani brought Venezuelan cornmeal to make traditional arepas. Then we kept the South American theme going by buying a heap load of coconuts to blend up into creamy piña coladas for everyone!
We all had a blast and I am so glad that our newcomers received a proper iwoca welcome!
